10 feared trapped after stone quarry collapses in Mizoram

At the least ten individuals had been feared trapped after a stone quarry collapsed in south Mizoram’s Hnahthial district, about 160 km from Aizawl on Monday, a senior police officer mentioned.

Hnahthial superintendent of police (SP) Vineet Kumar mentioned: “The incident occurred at round 3 pm when labourers of ABCI Infrastructure personal restricted had been working in a quarry at Maudarh village, about 43 minutes from Hnahthial city.” He mentioned 13 individuals had been working within the quarry when it caved in and considered one of them managed to flee.

The rescue operation was ongoing on the time of publication and the Nationwide Catastrophe Response Pressure (NDRF) was monitoring the search efforts.

Based on a preliminary report issued by Hnahthial district deputy commissioner R. Lalremsanga, about 10-15 persons are believed to be trapped beneath the particles.

No one had been rescued until 8pm on Monday, it mentioned.

Folks accustomed to the matter mentioned free soil caved in from above whereas the labourers had been breaking and amassing stones contained in the quarry. Hnahthial district officers and a medical staff rushed to the spot quickly after the incident.

Volunteers of the Younger Mizo Affiliation (YMA) from close by villages additionally rushed to the spot for the rescue operation, mentioned one of many individuals talked about above.

Maudarh is a small hamlet situated about 23 km from Hnahthial city and 39 km away from Lunglei city.

ABCI Infra pvt ltd, which is at present developing a freeway between Hnahthial and Daybreak village, collects stones or boulders from the Maudarh quarry, mentioned one other official accustomed to the matter.
