A 17-year-old woman was attacked with battery acid allegedly by a 20-year-old man in Assam’s Barpeta, the accused has been arrested, police mentioned on Tuesday.
In line with police, the incident occurred in Mazdia village below Sarthebari police station on Sunday evening when the woman was returning house after attending a cultural programme.
Police mentioned the woman was allegedly attacked after the sufferer determined to finish a relationship with the accused.
“Preliminary investigations present that the sufferer and the accused had been in a relationship and the woman broke up with the person not too long ago. Upset over this, the accused Meher Ali, attacked her with batter acid (sulphuric acid),” mentioned Pradip Saikia, further superintendent of police (ASP), Barpeta.
Police mentioned the woman sustained accidents on her neck and shoulder and was admitted to an area hospital. She was discharged on Monday after her situation improved.
Police mentioned have arrested Meher Ali and an investigation into the matter has been launched.
This was the second such incident reported in Assam up to now three days. On Monday, a businessman was arrested in Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur district for attacking a girl in her 30s with acid.
