As many as 61 college students from premier instructional institutes similar to Indian Institutes of Expertise (IITs), Indian Institutes of Administration (IIMs), and Nationwide Institutes of Expertise (NITs) have died by suicide during the last 5 years, the federal government has advised parliament. A bulk of them (33) had been from IITs, adopted by NITs (24) and IIMs (4).
Minister of state for schooling Subhas Sarkar shared the info in parliament on Monday that confirmed 11 instances of suicide had been reported in 2018, 16 in 2019, 5 in 2020, and 9 in 2021.
He was responding to a query from Congress members Pradyut Bordoloi, Gaurav Gogoi, Benny Behanan, Okay Muraleedharan, Rajmohan Unnithan, TN Prathapan, and Dean Kuriakose on whether or not the federal government has recognized the explanations behind suicides and steps taken to deal with them.
