'Scandalous': European Council On Russian Blockade Of Ukraine Ports

Ukraine and Russia are main exporters of grain and seed oil

Russia “should cease” its blockade of Ukrainian seaports after pulling out of a United Nations and Turkey-mediated deal to make sure grain shipments, the president of the European Council Charles Michel stated Friday.

“It is frankly scandalous that Russia, after having terminated the Black Sea grain initiative, is obstructing and attacking Ukrainian ports. This should cease,” Michel informed reporters in India’s capital of New Delhi, forward of a G20 summit.

Russia pulled out of the grain settlement in July after claiming that it had didn’t fulfil the objective of relieving starvation in Africa.

Tensions have constructed within the area since, with Russia mounting assaults on Ukrainian export hubs and Kyiv’s forces focusing on Moscow’s naval ports and warships.

The Kremlin has since requested Turkey to assist Russia export its grain to African nations with none involvement from Ukraine.

President Vladimir Putin stated Monday that Moscow is simply weeks away from supplying free grain to 6 African nations.

“The Kremlin’s supply of 1 million tonnes of grain to Africa is completely cynical,” Michel stated.

“Ships with grains have to have secure entry to the Black Sea,” he stated, noting that the UN initiative had initially delivered 32 million tonnes to the market, “particularly to growing nations”.

Ukraine and Russia are main exporters of grain and seed oil.

Final yr’s grain settlement helped push down international meals costs and supply Ukraine with an vital income to combat the warfare.

Russia has stepped up assaults on Ukraine’s transport infrastructure.

Putin just isn’t attending — and even planning to make a video tackle at — the G20 in India, with relations between Moscow and plenty of members of the bloc fraught over the warfare in Ukraine.

Overseas Minister Sergei Lavrov will take Putin’s place on the summit this weekend.
