Russia’s removal of Estonian border markers ‘unacceptable’

The European Union has denounced Russia’s elimination of buoys marking the border with Estonia on the Narva River.

A complete of 24 out of fifty buoys positioned to mark crusing routes had been eliminated within the early hours of Thursday, Estonian officers mentioned.

Tensions over the border have risen since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

EU international coverage chief Josep Borrell mentioned “such actions are unacceptable”.

“This border incident is a part of a broader sample of provocative behaviour and hybrid actions by Russia, together with on its maritime and land borders within the Baltic Sea area,” he mentioned in an announcement.

Moscow has taken situation with the position of the floating markers, used to stop boats from straying into international waters, and disputed the deliberate places of about half the 250 buoys, Estonia’s border guard service mentioned.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas mentioned she was attempting to make clear the scenario with Russia.

She mentioned it seemed to be a part of a “broader sample” of motion by Moscow to make use of “instruments associated to the border to create worry and nervousness”.

Estonia’s international ministry mentioned it had summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires and mentioned it was treating the transfer as a “provocative border incident”.

In an announcement, it mentioned it had demanded the “fast return” of the buoys.

It comes after the Russian defence ministry briefly printed a proposal to revise its maritime border within the Baltic Sea this week.

The proposal was deleted after creating concern amongst Nato members, together with Estonia.

Moscow is but to remark.
