‘Adversely affects interests of Muslims’: DMK moves Supreme Court against Waqf amendment | India News

Tamil Nadu’s ruling social gathering, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), on Monday filed a writ petition earlier than the Supreme Courtroom difficult the constitutional validity of the Waqf (Modification) Act, 2025, signalling a severe escalation within the social gathering’s opposition to the central laws that it says undermines minority rights.

Filed by DMK deputy common secretary and MP A Raja, who additionally serves on the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Invoice, the petition contends that the amendments to the Waqf Act, 1995, infringe upon the basic rights of the Muslim group. The petition has been settled by senior advocate P Wilson.

In an announcement, the social gathering mentioned the DMK authorities, below the management of Chief Minister M Okay Stalin, has persistently labored for the socio-economic upliftment of minorities and backward courses. “The DMK Authorities had handed a decision dated 27 March, 2025 moved by the Hon’ble Chief Minister within the Tamil Nadu Legislative Meeting urging the Union Authorities to withdraw the Waqf (Modification) Invoice, 2025 because it was unconstitutional and adversely affected the rights and pursuits of the Muslim minority group,” the assertion mentioned.

Regardless of opposition from members of the JPC and varied stakeholders, the modification was handed by Parliament and notified on April 6. The DMK has claimed that essential objections raised in Parliament weren’t addressed.

The DMK mentioned the social gathering selected to combat it legally because the speedy implementation of the Act infringes and prejudices the rights of about 50 lakh Muslims in Tamil Nadu and 20 crore Muslims in different components of the nation.

The transfer follows CM Stalin’s announcement on April 3 within the state Meeting that the DMK would strategy the Supreme Courtroom.
