UK court denies Nirav Modi’s bail plea again as CBI pushes for extradition in PNB fraud case | India News

A courtroom in London rejected a contemporary bail petition filed by fugitive Indian diamond service provider Nirav Modi, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stated on Thursday.

Modi’s bail plea, which was heard by the Excessive Courtroom of Justice, King’s Bench Division, was rejected for the tenth time since his detention in his extradition case to India to face fees within the Punjab Nationwide Financial institution fraud and cash laundering case amounting to as much as Rs 6,498 crore.

The 52-year-old’s authorized counsel argued for bail on the grounds of “passage of time” and the hostile affect on his well being in his London jail, as per PTI.

“Recent bail petition filed by Nirav Deepak Modi was rejected Thursday by the Excessive Courtroom of Justice, King’s Bench Division, London. The bail arguments have been strongly opposed by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) advocate, who was ably assisted by a powerful CBI group consisting of investigating and legislation officers who travelled to London for this function,” the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stated in an announcement in New Delhi.

CBI might efficiently defend the arguments which resulted in rejection of the bail, it stated in a press launch.

Nirav Modi alongside along with his uncle Mehul Choksi are accused of routing one among India’s largest banking scams, involving the fraudulent issuance of Letters of Enterprise (LOUs) by PNB. Modi allegedly defrauded Indian banks of over Rs 6,498 crore, whereas Choksi’s fraud is pegged at over Rs 7,000 crore. Each fled India earlier than the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed instances in 2018.

Modi was arrested in March 2019, and his extradition was accepted by the courtroom in February 2021, and by the UK authorities in April 2021. Nonetheless, he nonetheless has not come to India. Since his arrest, he remained at Wandsworth Jail in southwest London.
