E-commerce platforms must audit, eliminate ‘dark patterns’, says Minister | India News

The Centre has requested e-commerce platforms to conduct common inside audits to determine and get rid of darkish patterns on their platforms. Shopper Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, after a high-level stakeholders assembly Wednesday, mentioned, “Corporations should not look ahead to the Central Shopper Safety Authority (CCPA) to intervene. They need to proactively acknowledge and take away these misleading practices earlier than notices are issued. This isn’t regulatory compliance: it’s about constructing belief along with your customers.”

The assembly was attended by Shopper Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare, who additionally heads the CCPA, and representatives of main e-commerce firms, together with Airbnb, Amazon, Apple, Zepto, Ola Electrical, Tata Digital, Adidas India, and Samsung. The representatives of main business associations and Voluntary Shopper Organisations and Nationwide Legislation Universities, additionally attended the assembly.

Darkish patterns are ways utilized by on-line platforms to mislead clients and stop them from making the correct selections. On December 1, 2023, the CCPA issued tips for the “prevention and regulation” of darkish patterns.
