Wary of landslides, Karnataka seeks report on carrying capacity of Western Ghats | Bangalore News

After a spell of extraordinarily heavy rainfall threatened landslides within the ecologically delicate Western Ghats area in Karnataka, the state authorities has directed the Forest Division to conduct a research on the carrying capability of the area.

Karnataka Forest, Ecology and Atmosphere Minister Eshwar Khandre has written to the extra chief secretary of the division to submit a complete report on the matter. In a letter dated Might 27, Khandre mentioned that “a number of roads (and) initiatives are being applied endangering the Western Ghats, leading to landslides.”

The minister famous the issues raised by ecologists and scientists over these developmental actions. “On this background, a research on the carrying capability of Western Ghats needs to be carried out and a complete report submitted inside three months,” the minister mentioned within the letter.

Carrying capability refers back to the most variety of actions that may be supported in an ecologically delicate area.

Conservation of the Western Ghats is a delicate concern, particularly in Malnad districts of the state, as there was native opposition to imposing curbs on developmental actions. In September final 12 months, the Karnataka Cupboard rejected the Kasturirangan committee report on the safety of Western Ghats after legislators from districts falling inside the Western Ghats opposed it.

Over time, a number of landslides have taken place alongside the Western Ghats.
