Digital news publishers’ body bats for copyright protection in AI model training | India News

Amid rising issues over the misuse of Synthetic Intelligence (AI) and potential copyright violations, the Digital Information Publishers Affiliation (DNPA) has welcomed the Centre’s initiative to evaluation the advanced intersection of AI and copyright regulation.

“DNPA firmly believes that utilising the content material of digital information publishers, with out consent, for AI coaching and subsequent generative AI purposes, corresponding to search help and knowledge functions, constitutes an infringement of copyright. The affiliation advocates for a regime that ensures truthful compensation for content material producers, recognising their rights within the digital panorama,” it stated.

Any authorities initiative “to make sure truthful play” is significant for the expansion of digital information media within the nation, it stated.

This initiative is headed by the Division for Promotion of Business and Inside Commerce (DPIIT), beneath the Ministry of Commerce and Business, which is able to search stakeholder suggestions on how AI intersects with present copyright legal guidelines.

In its assertion, the DNPA asserted that using digital information publishers’ content material with out permission for AI coaching and generative purposes constitutes copyright infringement. The affiliation has strongly advocated for a regulatory framework that ensures truthful compensation to content material creators, safeguarding their rights in an evolving digital surroundings.

“DNPA appears to be like ahead to working with the ministry to formulate a good and balanced regime that permits for truthful compensation for content material producers whereas permitting for AI fashions to construct and evolve,” it stated.
