Sri Lankan Navy arrests 8 Indian fishermen for alleged illegal fishing | India News

The Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday arrested 8 Indian fishermen and seized their trawler for allegedly poaching within the island nation’s waters, in line with an official launch.

The arrests had been made throughout a search operation within the north of Mannar, the Navy mentioned in a press launch.

The eight fishermen and their trawler could be handed over to the Fisheries Inspectorate in Mannar for authorized proceedings, it mentioned.

“The North Central Naval Command noticed a bunch of Indian fishing boats partaking in unlawful fishing, trespassing into Sri Lankan waters within the early hours of in the present day. In response, the North Central Naval Command deployed its Inshore Patrol Craft to drive away these Indian fishing boats from island waters, north of Mannar,” it mentioned.

Fishermen from each India and Sri Lanka are arrested steadily for inadvertently trespassing into one another’s waters.

The fishermen problem is a contentious one within the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen within the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in a number of alleged incidents of illegally coming into the island nation’s territorial waters.

The Palk Strait, a slender strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a wealthy fishing floor for fishermen from each international locations.
