Amazon.com pays $2.5 billion in fines and redress to Prime subscribers to settle the US Federal Commerce Fee’s case alleging the retail juggernaut signed customers up for the subscription with out their consent and made it tough to cancel, the FTC mentioned on Thursday.

Of that, $1.5 billion will go right into a fund to repay eligible Prime subscribers and Amazon won’t admit wrongdoing as a part of the settlement, the FTC mentioned.

Amazon should now make it simple to cancel Prime as a part of settlement.

At a trial in Seattle federal courtroom, the FTC accused Amazon of duping tens of hundreds of thousands of Prime clients by signing them up with out consent and locking them in with overly advanced cancellation strategies.

The FTC began probing Amazon’s subscription practices throughout President Donald Trump’s first time period and the case was filed throughout Joe Biden’s presidency.
