Many EU nations are additionally members of Nato and its chief, Mark Rutte, stated they had been working collectively to guard member states on the japanese flank from aerial menace.

The EU confused its “flagship” initiatives could be developed in “shut co-ordination” with Nato, and wouldn’t duplicate the Western defensive alliance’s work.

No estimates got to the general price, however Kubilius stated “we’re not speaking right here about a whole lot of billions”.

The “defence roadmap” nonetheless must be authorized by member states at a leaders’ summit subsequent week.

Nonetheless, various EU states have already backed plans for a multi-layered “drone wall” to rapidly detect, then monitor and destroy Russian drones.

In current weeks, tensions have escalated between the EU and Russia, after Poland and Romania – each Nato members – stated Russian drones had breached their airspace.
