‘Africa’s Titanic’: Remembering Senegal’s Joola tragedy

On 26 September 2002, The Joola, a government-owned Senegalese ferry, capsized off the coast of The Gambia, killing over 1,800 folks. There have been simply 64 survivors.

It’s the second-worst non-wartime maritime catastrophe in historical past, taking the lives of greater than the notorious Titanic.

Twenty years on, the BBC investigates why this tragedy occurred and tells the harrowing, heart-warming tales of survivors and households, who proceed to name for the wreckage to be raised from the ocean mattress.
