COP27: India resists calls for raising ambitions, says rich nations must take lead

India on Monday firmly resisted requires growing international locations to boost ambitions on the ongoing UN local weather summit in Egypt, saying “goalposts are being shifted continuously” whereas wealthy nations have “enormously” failed in delivering the expertise and monetary assets wanted for low-carbon growth.

Making an intervention on the “Ministerial Excessive-Degree Roundtable on Pre-2030 Ambition”, Union Surroundings Minister Bhupender Yadav stated the developed international locations should take the lead in elevating ambitions as the majority of finance and expertise is on the market with them.

“The conference (UNFCCC) and the Paris Settlement each recognise this, however we have now not had enough motion,” he stated.

Yadav stated the historic cumulative emissions of nations needs to be the measure of their accountability to boost ambitions and the goal set by some developed nations that they “should attain web zero even earlier than 2030 and 2050 just isn’t sufficient in any respect”.

India stated not delivering monetary assets to growing international locations is an “huge failure” and calling for ambition from the growing international locations is “not significant if the time required for low-carbon growth just isn’t recognised”.

“Sadly, with each decade, with each new settlement, with each new scientific report, increasingly motion is demanded from the growing international locations. If goalposts are modified continuously, it won’t yield outcomes however solely phrases and guarantees,” Yadav stated.

The minister stated it should be recognised that the alternatives for ambition range throughout events. If not, efforts to extend ambition from those that have little to offer will solely lead to inaction, he added.
