Following objections with respect to the draft guidelines on reducing the age restrict for buy of liquor in Karnataka to 18 years, the state authorities on Wednesday mentioned it has determined to withdraw the proposed modification and stick with 21 years as the brink.

The Karnataka Excise Division has cited objections raised by public, associations and media for the choice.

Part 36(1)(g) of the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965, prohibits sale of liquor to individuals underneath the age of 18 years. Nonetheless, as per Rule 10(1)(e) of the Karnataka Excise (Common Situations of Licences) Guidelines, 1967, sale of liquor to individuals beneath the age of 21 is prohibited, the division mentioned in a launch.

In an effort to take away this contradiction referring to age within the Act and the principles, the division mentioned: “Draft notification dated January 9 has been printed to amend the rule proposing to substitute the phrases ‘eighteen years’ for the phrases ‘twenty-one years’, as per the suggestions of the Excessive Stage Committee constituted for efficient implementation, to establish and eradicate redundant elements within the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965 and Guidelines framed thereunder.”

A interval of 30 days was given for objections or options from individuals prone to be affected with respect to the mentioned draft guidelines.

“In consideration to the objections raised by public, associations and media with respect to the mentioned draft guidelines reducing the age restrict from 21 years to 18 years…the draft guidelines printed to amend Rule 10 (1)(e) of the Karnataka Excise (Common Situations of Licences) Guidelines, 1967 and substitute the phrases eighteen years for the phrases twenty-one years, has been withdrawn with instant impact,” the discharge mentioned.
