New Delhi: A Surat district courtroom on Thursday sentenced Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to 2 years in jail after holding him responsible in a felony defamation case over a comment on the “Modi” surname in 2019. The courtroom later granted Rahul bail to attraction.

The prosecuting lawyer Ketan Reshamwala stated Rahul had been convicted beneath Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code. “The sentence awarded is for 2 years… he has pleaded that he could also be launched on bail until the attraction interval… The courtroom has granted him bail for 30 days and till attraction, the sentence is suspended,” Reshamwala stated.

Shortly after the sentence, Rahul Gandhi tweeted a quote by Mahatma Gandhi. “Mera dharam satya hai aur ahimsa par adharit hai. Satya mera bhagwan hai, ahimsa ussey paaney ka sadhan” (My “faith” relies on “fact and non-violence”).

The case was filed on a grievance lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi after the Congress chief allegedly stated: “How come all of the thieves have Modi because the frequent surname?”

The complainant claimed the controversial comment was made at a rally at Kolar in Karnataka, forward of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He stated the remark defamed the complete Modi neighborhood.

The courtroom of Chief Judicial Justice of the Peace, H.H. Varma, had concluded listening to closing arguments final Friday and set 23 March because the date of judgment.
