After avian flu outbreak, over 20k birds to be culled in Kerala

With the outbreak of avian influenza being confirmed amongst geese in Kerala’s Alappuzha district, authorities on Thursday started operations to cull over 20,000 birds in Vazhuthanam ward in Haripad municipality to test unfold of the illness.

The presence of the an infection was confirmed after the samples of useless birds had been despatched to the Nationwide Institute of Excessive Safety Animal Illnesses in Bhopal for examination.

From Saturday (October 28 ), all birds situated inside a km radius of the epicentre of the illness can be culled, district authorities stated in a press release.

As many as 20,471 geese can be killed and eight Speedy Response Groups (RRTs), with 10 members every, are engaged in culling operations as per the directives of veterinarians and adhering to the central norms on this regard, it stated.

Within the wake of the avian flu, the district collector has banned the consumption and sale of the egg and meat of home birds together with duck, hen, quail and so forth in Haripad Municipality and varied close by panchayats.
