Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, former chief minister of West Bengal, passes away at 80 | Latest News India

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, the previous chief minister of West Bengal, handed away on Thursday at his residence. He was 80 years previous. The previous CM has been ailing for a number of years from power respiratory points.

The veteran CPI(M) chief is survived by his spouse, Mira, and son Suchetan.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences over the demise of the veteran leader.

“Shocked and saddened by the sudden demise of the previous Chief Minister Sri Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. I’ve been figuring out him for final a number of many years, and visited him a couple of occasions when he was sick and successfully confined to residence in the previous few years. My very honest condolences to Meeradi and Suchetan at this hour of grief. I talk my condolences to the members of the CPI(M) celebration and all his followers,” she wrote on X (previously referred to as Twitter).

She added, “We’ve got already taken a call that we will give him full respect and ceremonial honour throughout his final journey and rites.”

West Bengal chief of opposition and BJP chief Suvendu Adhikari additionally expressed his condolences.

“I’m deeply saddened to study that former West Bengal Chief Minister; Shri Buddhadeb Bhattacharya has left for his heavenly abode. Condolences to his relations and admirers. I pray that his soul finds everlasting peace. Om Shanti,” he wrote.

Bhattacharjee was a veteran CPI(M) chief, who served because the West Bengal CM from 2002 to 2011, succeeding Jyoti Basu. In 2011, Bhattacharjee misplaced the meeting election to Mamata Banerjee, ending the CPI(M)-led Left Entrance’s 34-year-long rule within the state.

In 1966, Bhattacharjee joined the CPI(M) as a major member. In 1968, he was elected state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation, the youth wing of the CPI(M) that was later merged into the Democratic Youth Federation of India.

He was elected to the state committee of the CPI(M) in 1972 and was inducted into the state secretariat in 1982.

The previous CM additionally served as minister of data and public relations within the West Bengal cupboard and minister of data and cultural affairs. He held departments of city improvement and municipal affairs.

Bhattacharjee was additionally a former member of the CPM’s prime decision-making physique, Politburo.

His tenure because the CM was marked by agitations over the acquisition of land for industries led by Mamata Banerjee.

Over the previous few years, he principally stayed away from public programmes and remained confined to his two-room authorities condo at Palm Avenue in south Kolkata.
