Denver’s plans to improve safety at homeless housing sites after homicides

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston has directed elevated police patrols, safety cameras, managed entry, and contract safety guards at a metropolis homeless shelter beginning Tuesday following the double murder dying of a pair.

“The security and wellbeing of our employees, our accomplice group’s employees, and residents is a high precedence,” metropolis spokesman Jose Salas stated in a press release.

Metropolis officers introduced the motion plan to enhance security on the former DoubleTree resort, 4040 N. Quebec St. in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood, as police investigated the double murder Saturday night time. A person and a girl had been killed within the 300-room constructing, leased by the town since November to be used as a transitional housing shelter, considered one of a number of arrange as a part of Johnston’s initiative to offer housing for homeless individuals within the metropolis.

The previous resort is owned by Rocky Mountain Communities, a nonprofit that gives residences across the state for low-income residents.

Underneath the town’s plan for elevated safety, the town’s senior advisor Cole Chandler “will probably be taking a hands-on management function” on the former resort “in partnership with the Salvation Military,” metropolis officers stated. Denver officers plan to:

— Enhance staffing by metropolis workers, housing managers, and contract safety guards on the former DoubleTree resort website

— Safe all entrances and exits

— Arrange a badge system and use picture ID playing cards for residents and employees to achieve entry

— Set up further surveillance cameras

— Enhance Denver Police Division patrols

— Deploy case managers to conduct weekly check-ins with every resident.

A few of the adjustments are quick, metropolis officers stated, including that the safety plan is supposed to assist maintain all the metropolis’s homeless housing websites.
