Investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into alleged irregularities within the functioning of the chit fund firm owned by Gokulam Gopalan, the producer of Malayalam movie ‘L2: Empuraan’, has revealed that the corporate had obtained Rs 372 crore in money from NRIs for its chit fund subscription and paid Rs 7 crore in money to its NRI subscribers in violation of RBI rules.

The ED is probing Gopalan’s firm, M/s Sree Gokulam Chits and Finance Co Pvt Ltd, for alleged violations of provisions of the Overseas Alternate administration Act (FEMA). Gopalan was on Monday questioned by the ED at its Kochi workplace in reference to the case. Sources stated throughout questioning Gopalan admitted that no permission was taken by his firm from the Registrar of Chits or an officer authorised from the state authorities to gather subscriptions from NRIs.

In line with ED probe particulars accessed by The Indian Categorical, round 15,000 NRIs or their relations had subscribed to the chit fund schemes of the corporate from 2002 onwards and the overall quantity paid by them was round Rs 371.80 crore in money. Additional, Rs 220.74 crore was collected in cheques in the direction of the subscription to chit funds from the NRIs, the ED has stated. Nonetheless, earlier than June 11, 2015, NRIs weren’t permitted to subscribe to the chit funds in India. In line with the ED, by the use of Round No. 107 dated June 11, 2015 issued by the RBI, NRIs have been allowed to subscribe to the chit funds on non-repatriation foundation.
