New Delhi:

Two UN peacekeepers have been injured in a strike by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) on their headquarters in south Lebanon on Thursday. The assault led to vast worldwide condemnation, particularly by the European members of the ‘Blue Helmet’ mission.

This is your 10-point cheat sheet to this large story

  1. Israel admitted its forces opened fireplace within the space, saying Hezbollah militants operated close to UN posts. Italy, a significant contributor of troops to the UN peacekeeping power, stated the acts “might represent warfare crimes” whereas the US stated it was “deeply involved.”
  2. The peacekeeping mission final week rejected Israel’s calls for to “relocate” from a few of its positions in south Lebanon, the place the IDF has been hitting what it claimed have been Hezbollah targets. The United Nations Interim Drive in Lebanon, or UNIFIL, has some 10,000 peacekeepers deployed in south Lebanon. It has been calling for a ceasefire since combating escalated between the IDF and the militant group Hezbollah on September 23.
  3. The UN mission confirmed two peacekeepers have been injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired a shell in the direction of an commentary tower on the UNIFIL headquarters in south Lebanon’s Naqura, straight hitting it.
  4. The peacekeepers didn’t endure critical accidents, “however they continue to be in hospital,” it stated. They’re Indonesian nationals, a UNIFIL spokesperson stated. Indonesia can be a significant contributor of troops to the UNIFIL.
  5. Indonesia’s UN ambassador Hari Prabowo stated the incident “clearly demonstrates how Israel positioned itself above worldwide regulation, above impunity and above our shared values of peace.” Israel claimed its navy “opened fireplace within the space” of the UNIFIL base after telling UN forces to hunt shelter.
  6. Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stated the assault and different incidents that the UNIFIL blames on Israel “might represent warfare crimes”, and requested for an evidence as a result of “it was not a mistake”. The Defence Minister described the taking pictures as insupportable, and filed protests together with his Israeli counterpart and the nation’s ambassador to Italy.
  7. The White Home stated it was “deeply involved”. “We perceive Israel is conducting focused operations close to the Blue Line to destroy Hezbollah infrastructure… it’s crucial that they not threaten UN peacekeepers’ security and safety,” the White Home stated.
  8. Spain’s overseas ministry stated it “strongly condemns the Israeli firing that hit UNIFIL headquarters” which it known as a “grave violation of worldwide regulation”. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris, whose nation has about 370 troops within the mission, stated “any firing within the neighborhood of UNIFIL troops or services is reckless and should cease”.
  9. UNIFIL headquarters and close by positions “have been repeatedly hit,” the mission stated. On Wednesday, “IDF troopers intentionally fired at and disabled” perimetre-monitoring cameras round a place, UNIFIL added.
  10. The top of UN peacekeeping Jean-Pierre Lacroix stated peacekeepers have been at “critical danger” and that by Sunday 300 Blue Helmets have been briefly relocated to bigger bases “with the motion of one other 200 deliberate.” UNIFIL’s footprint in essentially the most affected positions can be slashed by 25 %, he stated. “The security and safety of peacekeepers is now more and more in jeopardy,” Mr Lacroix instructed the UN Safety Council oln Thursday.
