Their romance was hardly a fairytale firstly. Johnny first met June, born into the well-known Carter Household nation clan, on the Grand Ole Opry in 1956, when her marriage to nation star Carl Smith dissolved. (Her daughter, Carlene Carter, turned a recording star with Carl within the late ’80s.)
They started recording and performing collectively and falling for one another within the early ’60s, when June was married to second husband Rip Nix (their daughter Rosey died of carbon monoxide poisoning final Oct. 24, 2003), and Johnny was with first spouse Vivian.
Their forbidden love produced Johnny’s largest hit, Ring of Fireplace, written by June and her songwriting companion Merle Kilgore, who stated: “One morning in 1963, June stated, ‘I am falling an increasing number of in love with Johnny, and I do not know what to do about it.’ She had a letter from a buddy who was having an affair and wrote that love was like a burning ring of fireplace. That is how we began the tune.”
Tommy Money added: “They fell in love once they started working collectively. Johnny was nonetheless married to Vivian on the time, and June was expressing her sincere feelings within the tune.”
