Karnataka elderly couple cyber fraud suicide: Gujarat man in police net | Bangalore News

The Karnataka Police Monday knowledgeable they’ve arrested a person from Gujarat for the suicide of an aged couple in Belagavi final month.

The accused has been recognized as Chirag Jeevaraj Bhai Lakkad, a resident of Surat.

On March 27, Diogjeron Nazareth, 83, and his spouse, Flaviana Nazareth, 78, had been discovered lifeless at their residence. Diogjeron Nazareth had left a suicide notice stating he was defrauded by cyber criminals disguised as Mumbai Crime Department officers. Diogjeron Nazareth transferred Rs 59.63 lakh to 22 financial institution accounts throughout a number of states after the cybercriminals knowledgeable him {that a} SIM card had been bought in his title and was being misused for harassment and unlawful actions.

A police officer, who’s a part of the probe, mentioned: “Of many transactions made, in a single RTGS transaction, Rs 6,10,000 was despatched to a checking account the place the checking account holder title was Balaji Industries. Nonetheless, up to now, we don’t see any registered agency holding the checking account.”

“Lakkad had a SIM card linked to Balaji Industries’ checking account, and from there, the cash was transferred to 2 different accounts by way of internet banking. It appears to be like like he’s a part of an even bigger nexus and was working for a fee. After the probe, we’ve handed him over to judicial custody,” the police officer added.

Diogjeron Nazareth labored on the Secretariat in Mumbai, and after retirement, he shifted to Bidi village in Belagavi. The deceased couple didn’t have youngsters.

The police mentioned Diogjeron had borrowed Rs 5 lakh from two pals, Rs 50,000 from a priest, and brought a gold mortgage of Rs 7.15 lakh, purportedly to switch cash to the cybercriminals.
