The police in Belur of Karnataka’s Hassan district took a lady into custody for allegedly desecrating an idol inside a temple Sunday, triggering tensions within the historic city.
In line with the Belur police, the idol contained in the Vidya Ganapathi Temple, situated on the premises of the City Municipal Council workplace, was desecrated by the girl. This was found by locals, who alerted the police.
CCTV footage from the temple confirmed a lady together with her face coated getting into the premises, and desecrating the idol. The girl, later recognized by the police as Leelamma of Vijayanagar Structure, Hassan district, was taken into custody on Sunday night.
Mohammed Sujitha, Superintendent of Police, instructed reporters that the girl is mentally sick, and an in depth probe was on.
In line with the police, Leelamma left her residence at 8.30 pm, and travelled to Belur, situated round 40 km away. After allegedly desecrating the idol, she returned residence, and her actions had been recorded on CCTV cameras.
Bharatiya Janata Celebration (BJP) leaders within the state had been fast to attribute the incident to “anti-Hindu forces”. BJP state president B Y Vijayendra, in a submit on X, mentioned that such incidents had elevated after Congress got here to energy.

Throwing stones at Ganeshotsava, participating in vile acts of defiling the idols of gods, and as a continuation of this, the incident of sneaking into the historic Ganesh temple in Belur, Hassan district, inserting slippers on the idol, and committing this lowly desecration is extraordinarily despicable and condemnable,” he mentioned.

Quickly after the incident, residents launched protests within the city. Fearing communal tensions, police stepped up safety.
