Kerala CM targets Governor for asking 9 VCs to quit; order challenged in HC

The Kerala Excessive Courtroom is about to carry a particular sitting on Monday at 4 pm amid row over Governor Arif Mohammad Khan’s order to vice chancellors of 9 universities to stop. The route by the Kerala Governor – which was issued citing a Supreme Courtroom order – has sparked a serious row within the southern state with the ruling Left Democratic Entrance (LDF) saying on Sunday it might maintain demonstrations in opposition to it. The vice chancellors have now moved the excessive court docket in opposition to the order.

On Monday, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held a presser, asking the VCs to not stop. The governor, Vijayan mentioned, has “no authority to ask vice chancellors to resign”. He additional mentioned that the accountability of the discrepancies within the appointments – if any – lies with the governor.

“It was the governor who appointed them, and the duty of illegality in appointment – if there are any – additionally lies with him,” the chief minister was quoted as saying by information company PTI. Calling the governor’s transfer “uncommon”, Vijayan accused him of “waging a struggle” with an intention to “destroy universities” within the state.

On Sunday, the Kerala Governor had issued instructions, asking the vice chancellors of 9 universities – College of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi College, Cochin College of Science and Know-how, Kannur College, APJ Abdul Kalam Technical College, Shree Shankaracharya College of Sanskrit, College of Calicut and Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam College – to stop by 11:30 am on Monday. In a press release posted on Twitter by his workplace, a Supreme Courtroom order on cancellation of appointment of the vice chancellor of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological College – for being opposite to College Grants Fee rules – was cited.

Whereas the state’s increased schooling minister R Bindu mentioned that “an unlucky scenario” had been created, legislation minister P Rajeev stepped up assault saying that nowhere in any UGC regulation or within the Structure, it was talked about that the Chancellor must be the Governor.

In the meantime, chief of opposition VD Satheesan welcomed the transfer: “I welcome the truth that the Governor is able to appropriate the error he made by cooperating with the unlawful appointments of the Pinarayi authorities. The Governor’s determination has come as a setback to the federal government’s transfer to nominate vice-chancellors in defiance of UGC norms and procedures,” information company ANI quoted him as saying.
