Social employee Leila Kabir, who was the spouse of late socialist chief George Fernandes, died Thursday night at her Delhi residence after battling most cancers. She was 88. Her physique was cremated in Inexperienced Park on Friday.
Daughter of former Union minister Humayun Kabir, Leila was recognized with intestinal most cancers almost two years in the past and had recovered, however her well being deteriorated not too long ago. Leila married George Fernandes on July 22, 1971, when she was working as an assistant director within the Indian Purple Cross. Fernandes died in January 2019.
Former Janata Dal (United) Aneel Prasad Hegde, who attended the cremation on behalf of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, recalled that Leila and George Fernandes had been collectively in Odisha when the Emergency was imposed in 1975. Whereas Fernandes, who was then the president of the Socialist Social gathering, had gone underground, Leila travelled to the US and different international locations together with her new child son and ran a marketing campaign towards the Emergency imposed in India. She returned 22 months later when the Emergency was lifted.
Dr Sunilam of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti additionally attended the cremation and paid tributes to Leila. In a condolence message, he stated she was a devoted social employee who remained actively concerned in social work till her ultimate days.
“I first met her once I got here to Delhi for my PhD, and she or he was residing at 26, Tughlak Crescent. Because the spouse of George Fernandes, I had the chance to fulfill her once in a while. When George Sahab fell critically ailing, Laila-ji served him tirelessly for a few years,” he stated.
