A lady has been arrested for stealing 61 silk sarees value almost Rs 91,000 from a saree retailer within the Metropolis Market space of Bengaluru, whereas the proprietor of the store and his assistant have additionally been arrested for assaulting the girl.

The girl, recognized as Hampamma, 55, who’s from Andhra Pradesh, was accused on September 21 of stealing sarees from the Maya Silk Saree retailer by the proprietor, Umed Ram, 44, and his assistant, Mahendra S, 25. The store proprietor and his assistant assaulted the girl subsequently in an act of ethical policing, the police mentioned.

“The complainant, the proprietor of a saree store positioned throughout the limits of Metropolis Market Police Station, lodged a criticism on the Metropolis Market Police Station on 21/09/2025. Within the criticism, it was acknowledged {that a} girl was stealing a bundle of sarees from his store. The store proprietor caught her and handed her over to the Metropolis Market Police together with the stolen bundle of sarees,” the Bengaluru police mentioned in an official assertion on the incident.

“Throughout the course of the investigation, the police interrogated the accused girl, who confessed to stealing the saree bundle. She was then produced in courtroom and was remanded to judicial custody,” the police assertion mentioned.

“Additional, on the time when the girl was caught stealing sarees, the store proprietor assaulted her underneath the pretext of ethical policing. An unknown particular person recorded a video of this assault and circulated it on social media. Based mostly on this incident, a case was registered on 25/09/2025 on the Metropolis Market Police Station towards the store proprietor who assaulted the girl and one other particular person,” the Bengaluru police assertion additional mentioned.

“On this case, the accused individuals, the store proprietor and his aide, had been arrested and produced earlier than a courtroom which remanded each accused to judicial custody,” the police mentioned.

In keeping with the police complaints within the two instances, the theft by the girl was initially noticed by the proprietor on the saree retailer’s CCTV footage for September 20. On September 21, when the store proprietor and his assistant noticed the girl once more close to the shop, they caught her and thrashed her.

The police initiated a case towards the store proprietor after the Karnataka State Fee for Girls wrote to the town police chief. The police mentioned efforts had been being made to hint the sarees alleged to have been bought by the girl after the theft on September 20.

The store proprietor and his assistant have been booked for the assault of a lady with the intent to outrage her modesty and trigger harm. A case of theft has been registered towards the girl.
