New Delhi: A Surat district courtroom on Thursday sentenced Congress MP Rahul Gandhi to 2 years in jail after holding him responsible in a felony defamation case over a comment on the “Modi” surname in 2019. The courtroom later granted Rahul bail to attraction.

The prosecuting lawyer Ketan Reshamwala stated Rahul had been convicted beneath Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code. “The sentence awarded is for 2 years… he has pleaded that he could also be launched on bail until the attraction interval… The courtroom has granted him bail for 30 days and till attraction, the sentence is suspended,” Reshamwala stated.

The case was filed on a grievance lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi after the Congress chief allegedly stated: “How come all of the thieves have Modi because the frequent surname?”
