TOKYO (Reuters) – Toyota Motor and Alphabet’s Waymo stated on Wednesday they may discover collaborating on the event of a brand new autonomous car platform and methods to reinforce next-generation personally owned autos (POVs).

Toyota will construct the platform, which will probably be deployed in Waymo’s autonomous car fleet, a Waymo spokesperson stated. The businesses may also discover how they’ll leverage Waymo’s AV know-how for Toyota’s POVs, the spokesperson added.

“The businesses goal to additional speed up the event and adoption of driver help and automatic driving applied sciences for POVs,” Toyota and Waymo stated in a joint assertion.

The businesses stated they may talk about the potential of increasing the scope of their cooperation, including that Toyota’s autonomous driving know-how unit Woven by Toyota will be part of the potential collaboration.

Waymo has been specializing in rising its presence by way of partnerships with automakers resembling Hyundai and Zeekr and different gamers resembling ride-hailing agency Uber. The plans with Hyundai and Zeekr stay in place, the spokesperson stated.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai stated final week that folks might be able to personal Waymo’s self-driving taxis sooner or later.
