WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Wednesday threw his assist behind congressional efforts for a federal takeover of the nation’s capital, saying he approves placing the District of Columbia again beneath direct federal management.
Talking to reporters aboard Air Drive One, Trump complained about crime and homelessness within the district, saying, “I feel we should always take over Washington, D.C. — make it secure.” He added, “I feel that we should always govern District of Columbia.”
Underneath phrases of the town’s Dwelling Rule authority, Congress already vets all D.C. legal guidelines and may outright overturn them. Some congressional Republicans have sought to go additional, eroding many years of the town’s restricted autonomy and placing it again beneath direct federal management, because it was at its founding.
Trump mentioned he appreciated District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser personally, however complained concerning the metropolis’s governance.
