
A wildfire that raced throughout miles of prairie and farmland on Colorado’s Japanese Plains is now contained, officers stated Wednesday afternoon.
The County Street 169 hearth was first reported round midday Tuesday and burned a complete of 5,599 acres, or simply underneath 9 sq. miles, Elbert County spokesperson Wendy Holmes stated.
The fast-moving wildfire was pushed by wind gusts as much as 55 mph and drew first responders from throughout metro Denver in addition to from the Colorado Division of Hearth Prevention and Management.
It sparked close to Matheson, an unincorporated neighborhood 17 miles southwest of Limon alongside U.S. 24. The reason for the fireplace is underneath investigation.
Whereas crews halted ahead progress and prevented the fireplace from leaping Colorado 71 south of Limon by 5 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters who remained in a single day confronted below-freezing temperatures, sustained winds, frozen hose traces and spot fires as they labored to comprise the wildfire, officers stated.
“Their efforts, along with these of a number of different companies, paid off,” North Metro Hearth Rescue leaders stated in a put up on X.
