A pair of critically endangered big tortoises aged about 100 years previous have grow to be first-time mother and father at Philadelphia Zoo.
The zoo stated this week it was “overjoyed” on the arrival of 4 hatchlings from Abrazzo and Mommy, a pair Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises.
The births had been a “first” within the zoo’s 150-plus-year historical past, it stated, and Mommy – who arrived in 1932 – was the oldest identified first-time mom of her species.
Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises are critically endangered within the wild, and there are fewer than 50 saved in US zoos.
The primary of Abrazzo and Mommy’s eggs hatched on 27 February, and others rapidly adopted. The zoo’s animal care crew is monitoring others that might nonetheless hatch within the coming weeks.
The 4 hatchlings weigh between 70 and 80 grams.
They’re being saved behind-the-scenes, inside Philadelphia Zoo’s Reptile and Amphibian Home, and are “consuming and rising appropriately”, the zoo stated.
