Bengaluru adopts GTFS data format, paving way for seamless multimodal transit with ‘Namma Transit’ launch | Bangalore News

In a big step in the direction of reworking Bengaluru’s public transport ecosystem, the town has formally adopted the Basic Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) by the India City Information Alternate (IUDX) platform. The transfer is critical, because it lays the digital groundwork for seamless integration throughout metro, bus, and last-mile providers.

Marking this shift, Namma Yatri launched ‘Namma Transit’ on Friday, a brand new function inside its app designed to unify bus, metro and first- and last-mile providers right into a single, guided journey. With real-time multimodal navigation, the function informs customers which metro station to move to, which platform and gate to make use of, and the best way to join with autos or cabs – multi functional app.

“At present, the function is open to solely choose customers. Within the coming days, the function will be accessed by all of them,” stated Shan M S, Chief Working Officer, Namma Yatri.

On the core of this transformation is GTFS, an open information format for public transit schedules and real-time updates, used globally in over 6,000 cities.

GTFS information permits journey planners like Namma Yatri and Tummoc to mix schedules, stay car areas, and route maps from a number of operators into one accessible interface. For commuters, this implies they’ll now examine when the subsequent bus or prepare is arriving, whether or not it aligns with their journey wants, and even plan onward connections with autos – all in actual time. The supply of this information facilitates smarter journey planning, quicker commutes, and improved last-mile accessibility.

The adoption of GTFS was enabled by collaboration amongst public businesses and personal innovators. The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Company (BMTC) IT crew standardised and streamed real-time information from over 6,000 buses, sending updates each 10 seconds – a posh job that required months of technical effort and coordination.

The initiative additionally stems from the #EnRoute Innovation Problem, supported by World Assets Institute (WRI) India, Mercedes-Benz Analysis and Improvement India, and Villgro, which introduced collectively service suppliers like Namma Yatri and Tummoc to develop commuter-centric, interoperable options.

“When commuters can simply discover cost-effective, quick, and dependable transport choices, the dependence on private autos reduces. Realizing precisely which bus to take, how far it’s, and whether or not last-mile choices can be found – even throughout a wet night – makes public transport a reliable possibility,” added Shan.
