DRI arrests 5 drug mules returning via Bengaluru after Thailand holiday, seizes 72 kg of hydroponic ganja

The Directorate of Income Intelligence (DRI) has arrested a number of members of a drug smuggling gang that recruited unemployed youth and despatched them on paid holidays to Thailand to convey again hydroponic ganja, the company stated in an official assertion on Friday, including that the arrests had been made in Bengaluru, Bhopal and Delhi.

The DRI has seized a complete of 72 kg of hydroponic ganja price round Rs 72 crore together with ₹ 1.02 crore in money within the operations throughout three cities.

The DRI stated it intercepted one suspect at a resort in Bengaluru within the early hours of August 21, shortly after he arrived from Thailand, and located 17.95 kg of hydroponic ganja in his possession.

A key mastermind from Delhi and 5 travellers who returned from Thailand with the contraband had been arrested in Bhopal and Bengaluru, the DRI added.

“The syndicate used to achieve out to varsity dropouts, part-time employed or unemployed youth by way of social media,” the DRI stated within the assertion.

The DRI’s pan-India operation to crack down on the smuggling of hydroponic ganja from Thailand started on August 20 below an operation titled ‘WeedOut’. DRI officers first intercepted two passengers on the Krantiveera Sangolli Rayana station on the night of August 20 whereas they had been set to journey on the Rajdhani Specific to Delhi. A search of their baggage revealed 29.88 kg of hydroponic ganja. The 2 travellers had arrived earlier in Bengaluru on a flight from Thailand.

A simultaneous interception of two extra passengers travelling on a Rajdhani Specific that left Bengaluru on August 19 was carried out on the Bhopal Junction railway station on August 20. The search of the bags of the 2 passengers revealed the presence of 24 kg of hydroponic weed, the DRI stated.

A staff additionally tracked down a key mastermind of the hydroponic ganja smuggling racket in Delhi and seized ₹ 1.02 crore of money from his possession, the DRI added.
