GM mustard field trials to begin from rabi season

The sector trials of the GM mustard hybrid DMH-11, which has been granted approval for ‘environmental launch’ by the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) lately, will start from the continued rabi season, an official mentioned on Monday.

Talking to The Indian Specific, Dr P.Okay. Rai, Director, ICAR-DRMR, mentioned, “So far as yield analysis trials are involved, we do them for 3 years. One is the preliminary varietal trial or the preliminary hybrid trial. If some entries are giving larger yield over the checks then solely these entries are promoted to the following stage of testing i.e., AHT (Advance Hybrid Trial-1).”

“So far as DMH-11 is worried, we’re going to take a look at it as IHT (preliminary hybrid trial). We’re going to have a small trial and put all these checks…. This trial will likely be carried out at a few of the centres… allow us to see whether or not it’s qualifying for the following stage of promotion or not,” Rai mentioned, including that the DRMR has obtained one kg seed of DMH-11 for the trials.

“As per the ICAR guidelines and laws, solely these entries that are displaying 10 per cent larger yield over the test selection and 5 per cent over the test hybrid will likely be promoted,” he mentioned.

“Regular hybrid assessments [for mustard] happen at 16 locations throughout the nation. We’ll attempt to put [the DMH-11] at 6-7 areas… sowing will start within the subsequent 4-5 days,” Rai mentioned, including that the mustard crop may be sown until November 15.
