Karnataka: Ordinance to hike SC, ST reservation gets Gov nod

Karnataka governor Thawarchand Gehlot on Sunday gave his assent to the state authorities’s ordinance to extend the quota of the Scheduled Caste (SC) and the Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities in jobs and the training sector, officers mentioned.

Passage of the ordinance will increase the state’s quota in academic establishments and authorities jobs for Scheduled Castes from 15 per cent to 17 per cent, and for Scheduled Tribes from 3 per cent to 7 per cent.

Nonetheless, it’s nonetheless unclear if the federal government is planning to regulate the rise within the quota below the present 50 per cent reservation cap. The extra quota takes the entire reservation within the state to 56 p.c.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai expressed his happiness over the Governor’s assent to the ordinance. He mentioned  the state Cupboard’s choice to carry the ordinance was based mostly on the suggestions of the Justice Nagamohan Das Fee.

He mentioned the ordinance may also be tabled in each Homes of the Karnataka Legislature to get it cleared there.

Quickly after the Governor gave his assent, the federal government issued a  particular gazette notification.

“Henceforth, the reservation for SC will go up from 15 per cent to 17 per cent and ST group quota will go up by 7 per cent from 3 p.c.  By mountain climbing reservations, the state authorities has exhibited its dedication,” Bommai mentioned.

“It’s a Deepavali reward from the state authorities for the SC/ST group. This ordinance might be authorised in each the Homes of the State Legislature,” the Chief Minister added.
