Kurt Dennis sues DPS, alleging district violated First Amendment

Kurt Dennis, the previous principal of McAuliffe Worldwide Faculty, on Tuesday sued Denver Public Faculties, alleging that the district retaliated towards him for talking publicly about security insurance policies following the March taking pictures at East Excessive Faculty.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court docket in Denver, alleges DPS, Superintendent Alex Marrero and 6 members of the college board violated Dennis’s First Modification proper to free speech by firing the previous principal after he spoke in a televised information interview in regards to the district’s coverage requiring educators to examine college students for weapons.

The interview adopted the taking pictures at East during which a teen present process such a search shot and wounded two directors — and it got here as mother and father, educators and others locally had been criticizing DPS’s self-discipline insurance policies and response to high school security.

Dennis’s termination in July drew additional outcry from mother and father, who known as on the district to reinstate him.

Just one board member — Scott Baldermann — voted towards the termination. Baldermann can also be the one board member not named within the lawsuit.

A month after DPS fired Dennis, the college board introduced the district was investigating the usage of a seclusion room at McAuliffe Worldwide Faculty. The investigation discovered that workers on the faculty, together with Dennis, violated district coverage by putting college students in two rooms with out correct supervision and both locking or holding the doorways shut whereas doing so. 

The Denver Police Division and the Colorado Division of Training are also investigating the usage of the room.
