SAIL, AAI pact on Rourkela airport signed, flights after DGCA nod: Scindia

NEW DELHI: An settlement has been signed between the Metal Authority of India (SAIL) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to operationalise the Rourkela airport, civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia advised the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

Scindia made the announcement in response to a starred query by Biju Janata Dal MP from Odisha Mamata Mohanta. He mentioned industrial flights can function on the airport as quickly because the aviation regulator Directorate Common of Civil Aviation completes its inspector and offers its nod.

Rourkela airport was among the many 5 airports in Odisha recognized for upgradation for the operation of flights underneath the regional connectivity scheme, Udan.

In supplementary questions, Mohanta had requested concerning the standing of the Rourkela airport and the Amarda Highway airstrip, a World Conflict II airfield often known as Rasgovindpur airstrip in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.

Scindia mentioned the aviation ministry has mentioned the airstrip with the defence ministry and the land has been allotted to the state authorities. The minister mentioned the state authorities must pay ₹26 crore to the defence ministry and it is going to be the state’s obligation to develop the airport.

The federal government has focussed on the upgradation of the Rourkela airport in view of the FIH Males’s World Cup scheduled to be held in Odisha in January 2023. Mohanta mentioned matches had been scheduled to be performed on the Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela.

The minister mentioned AAI has spent about ₹28 crore on the upgradation of the Rourkela airport which is a property of SAIL. “I’m glad to share that the airport work is full and boundary partitions have been constructed across the airport for Rs. 2 crore. Resurfacing of the runway has additionally been completed. The development of the perimeter wall can be carried out by 15 December and ₹6 crore has been allotted for the extension of the terminal constructing which can be accomplished by December 2023,“ the minister mentioned.

Scindia mentioned that he had directed AAI and SAIL to finish the written settlement of CNS and ANS. “I’m glad to announce that this settlement has been carried out right this moment at 10am,” Scindia mentioned.
