Working with Belgium to extradite Mehul Choksi: MEA | India News

The Union authorities Thursday mentioned it’s intently working with Belgium for the extradition of fugitive jeweller Mehul Choksi in order that he can face trial in India for the `13,000-crore Punjab Nationwide Financial institution (PNB) mortgage fraud.

India and Belgium have a longstanding extradition treaty.

The Belgian authorities confirmed on Monday that 65-year-old Choksi, who fled India in January 2018, was arrested in Antwerp on Saturday following an extradition request by Indian investigation companies.

Ministry of Exterior Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal mentioned Thursday: “Primarily based on our extradition request, he was arrested in Belgium. We’re intently working with the Belgian facet for his extradition to India in order that he can face trial within the nation.”

Based on sources, the Indian companies first approached Belgian authorities for Choksi’s extradition in September 2024. Earlier this yr, the CBI despatched a request once more, via the Ministry of Exterior Affairs.

Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal had mentioned they have been within the strategy of submitting an attraction. “Our attraction searching for his launch on bail will primarily be on the bottom of his medical situation, he’s present process remedy for most cancers. We can even be arguing that he’s not a flight threat,” Aggarwal mentioned.

Choksi, his nephew and fugitive diamond service provider Nirav Modi, and their relations have been amongst these booked by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2018 for perpetrating the alleged mortgage fraud at PNB’s Brady Home department in Mumbai.

Nirav Modi, declared a fugitive financial offender, has been lodged in a London jail since he was held by the authorities there in 2019 on the premise of a authorized request made by the ED and the CBI. He’s contesting extradition to India.
