Govt converted over 1,800 acre forest land for private projects in Karnataka since 2019, shows data

Since 2019, the Karnataka authorities has diverted 1,836.31 acre of forest land for presidency and personal tasks. In response to official paperwork of the Karnataka forest division, a replica of which is with The Indian Specific, majority of the conversions came about in Ballari and Uttara Kannada districts.

The paperwork revealed that 48 tasks have been authorized, for which the diversion of the forest land was required. Of the full diverted forest land, 786.77 acre of forest land in Ballari and 424.45 acre in Uttara Kannada district have been transferred for mining and authorities infrastructure tasks.

Whereas Chikkamagaluru misplaced 266.89 acres, Tumkuru needed to dispose of 101.8 acre of the forest panorama.

A senior forest official on situation of anonymity stated, “The diversion of the forest lands was in accordance with the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. In Ballari the switch of the forest lands was for mining tasks and in Uttara Kannada the diversion of the forest lands was majorly for enlargement of rail hall, irrigation and highway widening. These tasks do disturb the ecology of the forest and, usually, the forest division opposes such diversions however finally the federal government’s will works.”
